Hi, I'm Toby, the Proper Guitar Teacher

I know that you want to pick up your guitar and make music. Express yourself. Join in when there’s a song playing. Feel that the time you spend practicing is taking you somewhere.

But learning guitar online can leave you with more questions than answers. There’s always another scale, another hack, another video. You can spend hours searching, learn plenty of things and still wonder why your playing isn’t coming together.

You shouldn’t have to figure out how to teach yourself before you can learn to play.

A little guidance can change what feels possible.

I’m a professional guitarist, musician and teacher. For more than 25 years, I’ve helped hundreds of people learn guitar and bass; from complete beginners finding their first notes to experienced players developing their technique, musicianship and confidence.

Every student brings something different: favourite music, ambitions, frustrations and their own way of learning. My job is to help them find a clear next step and understand how it connects to the music they want to make.

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt along the way is this:

People don’t need more information. They need to know what to practise, why they’re practising it and where it’s leading.

That’s the thinking behind Proper Guitar Lessons.

The point of learning guitar is making music.

Scales, exercises and techniques are essential for becoming a better guitarist. How? Because they help You communicate Your creativity.

It's the application that I help with. I want to unlock the creativity that's inside every one of my students.

Playing guitar brings connection into my own life. After moving to a new area in 2025, joining in at pub band nights helped me make friends and find my place in the community. I know how much it can mean to feel part of the music. I want that for you too.

Your music. With someone to show you the way.

Your Turn to Solo brings that approach to soloing: clear, practical lessons that help you use the pentatonic scale, explore expressive techniques and create melodies and solos of your own.

I’ll bring the experience, encouragement and a clear route forward. You bring your guitar, your curiosity and the music you want to make.

Your Guitar. Your Journey. Start Here.
